Cardiac MRI: Principles, Protocols & Clinical Applications

One-Day Intensive Study Day

Cardiac MRI (CMR) has become a pivotal modality in modern cardiovascular diagnostics, offering unmatched detail and functional assessment without ionising radiation. This one-day study day provides radiographers and clinical professionals with an in-depth understanding of CMR fundamentals, safety, protocols, image optimisation and practical clinical interpretation.

Designed for radiographers looking to strengthen their skills in cardiac imaging, the course will cover both essential theory and real-world scanning practice, helping attendees gain confidence in performing and supporting high-quality CMR studies.

Course Overview

This interactive study day will provide a structured and practical introduction to:

  • Core physics underpinning cardiac MRI

  • Cardiac anatomy & physiology relevant to MRI

  • MRI sequences used in CMR (cine, black-blood, perfusion, LGE, mapping)

  • ECG gating, triggering & common troubleshooting

  • Protocol optimisation for cardiomyopathy, ischaemia, myocarditis & viability

  • Contrast administration, stress testing workflows & safety considerations

  • Artefacts specific to CMR and how to reduce them

  • Reading CMR images: understanding what the cardiologist needs

  • Working safely in a cardiac MRI environment

  • Case-based review of routine & acute presentations

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles and clinical value of cardiac MRI

  • Select and optimise appropriate CMR sequences

  • Confidently support stress perfusion and late gadolinium enhancement scans

  • Recognise common image artefacts and take steps to minimise them

  • Interpret basic functional and structural changes on CMR

  • Apply practical techniques to improve patient care during cardiac MRI studies

Who Should Attend?

  • Diagnostic Radiographers

  • MRI Radiographers

  • Trainee/Junior Radiographers

  • Cardiac Imaging Fellows

  • Healthcare professionals with an interest in cardiac MRI
